Size, Location, Topography & Zoning

The 6.1-acre former site of Peeples St Elementary School is now vacant and sits immediately adjacent to Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and in the heart of the historic West End neighborhood.  

A portion of the site is currently leased to the Willie Watkins Funeral Home, a long-standing institution in the neighborhood that hosted both John Lewis and Coretta Scott King’s funerals.  

The site has light tree coverage varying across the site.

Peeples St is currently zoned SPI-21 SA7, Low-Density Residential.

Plan Goals

The Peeples St Redevelopment Plan will center on the following goals:

Emphasize mixed-income single-family and multifamily rental housing options that blend into the unique character of the neighborhood.
Design should consider and incorporate the Victorian design elements of the neighborhood and create a new construction project that respects the history of the area.
Outcomes of the site redevelopment will be a mixture of housing with community resources (arts, nonprofit use), greenspace, early learning, workforce development, and commercial/retail space.
